Impacts of consistent attendance

Regular school attendance and engagement builds a strong foundation for early learners.

Long term positive outcomes, such as higher graduation rates, lower dropout rates and higher rates of enrollment in college are linked to children with consistent attendance patterns (National Forum on Education Statistics, 2018). When children attend early learning programs regularly, they have a greater chance of mastering grade-level skills which become the foundation for the next grade level. A child is considered chronically absent when they miss roughly 18 days or more of school.

Many county and district programs are available to support families with meeting needs that may be impacting attendance.

You can create strong attendance routines at home!

Classroom-level attendance resources
Classroom culture is the sum of many key contributing factors and makes an impact on student attendance. Children who are engaged, see their culture in the classroom, are supported emotionally, have tools to communicate their needs, and trust adults, are more likely to both attend school and externalize frustrations in more constructive ways. Connecting families with community resources that support their ability to bring their children to school is also key. The Outreach and Attendance Toolkit contains resources for classroom level attendance, including:
  • Key factors checklist - A list of guiding questions to help you identify key factors that may be impacting attendance
  • Resources and learning opportunities brought to you by the ԲԴDZپDzԲ DZǰپ and California Preschool Instructional Network
  • Family Partnerships and Culture best practices created by the California Department of Education
  • ߲’s Professional Learning Catalog - Learn about the many learning opportunities provided by the ߲ Office of Education to support your attendance and outreach efforts.

Public School Enrollment

߲'s public schools are committed to providing high-quality preschool, transitional kindergarten (TK) and kindergarten programming. To learn about enrolling your child in an early learning program, use the "Where to to enroll in early learning and care" tab.

TK-12 public education programs are free and open to all regardless of immigration status. Attending school and participating in school nutrition programs will not impact a child's or family member's immigration status.

The application and enrollment periods for public charter schools vary but generally take place between December and March.  A charter school must accept all students who wish to attend unless the school has limited space. When the number of students who wish to attend a charter school exceeds the school's capacity, attendance is determined by a public random drawing. Use this link to access SCCBOE-authorized charter school websites for specific information about applications, lotteries, and enrollment.
