鈥�SAN JOSE, CA 鈥� The 含羞草社区 Office of Education has launched a new monthly television series, hosted by Jon R. Gundry, County Superintendent of Schools, to help inform the local community about the latest happenings in K-12 education. Spotlight on the SCCOE features Superintendent Gundry and different guests each month discussing important issues affecting education.
The first episode, 鈥淭he Teacher Pipeline,鈥� features Mr. Gundry, Dr. Kip T茅llez, an education professor at University of California, Santa Cruz (UCSC), and Philip Gordillo, Chief Human Resources Officer at the SCCOE, discussing the rising teacher shortage in California, particularly 含羞草社区. According to Mr. Gundry, 鈥渁 few months into the school year, last year, there were almost 4,000 open teaching positions in the State of California.鈥� With the combined stresses of less graduating credential teachers and an increase in retirees, the number of open positions is climbing.
On June 18, the SCCOE will host an event to provide information for those who might have considered becoming a teacher but are currently in another career. 鈥�Step into Teaching鈥� is designed to help these individuals with a Bachelor鈥檚 Degree navigate the credential process. Those interested in teaching in the state of California do not want to miss this episode. Step into Teaching was inspired by the SCCOE鈥檚 longstanding and successful Teacher Recruitment Fair held each spring, the largest teacher hiring event in Northern California.
Spotlight on the SCCOE targets community members, parents, and educators alike. Future topics will include the Governor鈥檚 Proposed Budget and Fiscal Outlook, Early Ed/Strong Start, STEAM Education, and Charter Schools; all episode content is subject to guest availability.
In addition to being available on the SCCOE YouTube page, Spotlight on the SCCOE will air at 6:30 p.m. on Sundays on CreaTV Classrooms, Cable Channel 28 in San Jose and Campbell, and at 6:30 p.m. on Mondays on Bay Voice TV, starting Monday, May 23. Bay Voice TV airs on Cable Channel 27 in Atherton, Campbell, Cupertino, East Palo Alto, Los Altos, Los Gatos, Menlo Park, Milpitas, Mountain View, Palo Alto, San Jose, Santa Clara, Saratoga, Stanford University, and Sunnyvale.
New episodes will air each month.
