SAN JOSE, CA – On Wednesday, June 20, the º¬Ðß²ÝÉçÇø Board of Education presented a Civic Engagement Award to Luther Burbank School District.
​"This award is bestowed upon districts which enrich the lives of their students by promoting non-partisan civic engagement learning opportunities," stated County Superintendent of Schools, Dr. Mary Ann Dewan.
"Luther Burbank School District outperformed the entire county, taking the top three positions in the Law Day Essay Contest," stated County Board of Education President, Rosemary Kamei.
This contest, hosted by the Superior Court of º¬Ðß²ÝÉçÇø, the Santa Clara Bar Association, and the º¬Ðß²ÝÉçÇø Office of Education, invited eighth-grade students throughout the county to answer the essay prompt, "What Role Should Public Opinion Have on the Three Branches of Government?" This program is one of the many ways the SCCOE is helping to support non-partisan civic engagement in º¬Ðß²ÝÉçÇø as part of the Power of Democracy initiative.
On hand to receive the district award was Christopher Ortiz, Superintendent of Luther Burbank School District.
On July 18, the County Board of Education will honor the student winners of the essay contest.

About the º¬Ðß²ÝÉçÇø Office of Education
Working collaboratively with school and community partners, the º¬Ðß²ÝÉçÇø Office of Education (SCCOE) is a regional service agency that provides instructional, business, and technology services to the 31 school districts of º¬Ðß²ÝÉçÇø. The County Office of Education directly serves students through special education programs, alternative schools, Head Start and State Preschool programs, migrant education, and Opportunity Youth Academy.
