Program Description

Educator Preparation Programs suppports Special Education teachers credentialed before 2021 in meeting the new California Commision on Teacher Credentialing (CTC)​ standards through our fully online Education Specialist Bridge Authorization Program.

Conducted completely online, via an asynchronous model for maximum flexibility, this program helps educators transition from their existing special education credentials to the updated standards—enabling them to serve a broader range of student needs.

Educators who hold a full Preliminary or Clear Education Specialist Credential in Mild/Moderate Disabilities, Moderate/Severe Disabilities, or Early Childhood Special Education—including authorization for autism instruction or an equivalent—may apply for the program

​ ​The Preliminary Education Specialist Teaching Credential - Mild to Moderate Support Needs (MMSN) specialization prepares candidates to provide​ specially designed instruction, enabling stud​e​nts (TK-22) ​to access grade-level California Conten​t Standards​â¶Ä‹ in the Least Restrictive Environment​.

This specialization is designed to support ​students with Mild to Moderate Support Needs ​related to one or more of the following disabilities:​â¶Ä‹â€‹

  • ´¡³Ü³Ù¾±²õ³¾â€‹
  • Emotional disturbance
  • Intellectual disability
  • Multiple disabilities
  • Orthopedic impairment
  • Other health impairment​â¶Ä‹
  • Specific learning disability
  • Traumatic brain injury

The ​Education Specialist provide instruction and supports in one or more of the following domains:

  • Academics
  • Communication
  • Gross/fine motor
  • Social-Emotional
  • Behavioral
  • Learning environment access skills
​â¶Ä‹The supports may also include ​health, movement, and sensory support. MMSN practices may include a lower student-to-educator ratio.​ ​

  • This is a two-year internship-based program offering coursework 100% online. Eligible candidates work as paid interns​ in their second year.
  • Cohorts begin each semester in Spring, Summer or Fall.
  • First year focuses on coursework; second year, on coursework and internship.
  • Interns are assigned a program coach and a school district support provider.
  • Completion of the program results in a recommendation for a California Preliminary Teaching Credential​

​â¶Ä‹ Earn an Education Specialist T​eaching Credential in 12 Months or Less!

​The Education Specialist Accelerated Pathway - â€‹Mild Moderate Support Needs (MMSN) is designed for the ​ â€‹experienced teacher with a Multiple Subject or ​Single Subject Credential​ seeking to add a Mild to Moderate Support Needs (MMSN) Education Specialist Credential to their educational portfolio. Teachers with special education credentials in other areas of specialization are welcome to apply as well. ​

The pathway prepares candidates to provide specially designed instruction that enable stude​nts ages TK-22 ​to access grade-level California Conten​t Standards​â¶Ä‹ in the Least Restrictive Environment​. Our program is built around a framework of High Leverage Practices (HLP)​ in Special Education and for Inclusive Classrooms.

This specialization authorizes the holder to conduct educational assessments related to students’ access to the academic curriculum and progress towards meeting instructional goals, as well as​ to provide instruction, and special education support to students with mild to moderate support needs related to one or more of the following disabilities:

  • ​​A³Ü³Ù¾±²õ³¾
  • Emotional disturbance
  • Intellectual disability
  • Multiple disabilities
  • Orthopedic impairment
  • Other health impairment​
  • Specific learning disability
  • Traumatic brain injury

Education specialists provide instruction and support in one or more of the following domains: academics, communication, gross/fine motor, social-emotional, behavioral, vocational, and learning environment access skills.

Additionally, supports may extend to health, movement, and sensory support. MMSN practices may include a lower student-to-educator ratio.​ ​

  • Cohorts begin each semester in Spring, Summer or Fall.

The Teacher Induction Program with the Educator Preparation Programs (EPP) Department​ is designed to empower educators through a comprehensive approach grounded in three core dimensions:

  1. Scholarship: Involves the collection, analysis, and utilization of data to enhance performance.
  2. Theory: Encompasses foundational principles of leadership, including organizational culture, communities of professional learning, systems thinking, and adult learning theory.
  3. ​ Practice: Focuses on the application of learned knowledge and skills in the field.
​â¶Ä‹

Teaching Credential Areas Supported

The SCCOE EPP Teacher Induction Program supports all preliminary multiple-subject, single-subject, and education specialist teachers in obtaining their professional clear teaching credential.

​â¶Ä‹â€‹â¶Ä‹Why Choose Our Program?

This two-year, individualized, job-embedded program begins in the teacher's first year of teaching and includes:

  • Coaching and Mentoring: Each candidate is paired with a mentor teacher within the first 30 days, matched by credentials, grade level, and subject area.
  • Just-in-Time Support: Provides immediate assistance and guidance tailored to the teacher's needs.
  • ​ Professional Learning: Builds on the skills acquired in the preliminary credential program, documented in the Individualized Development Plan.

Tuition & Other Costs

  • $75 Application Fee
  • $4,500 tuition per year (for 2-year program).​
  • $3,000 tuition per year (for 2-year program) for school districts providing their own coach.
  • $6,000 tuition for Early Completion Option (eligibility restrictions apply).
  • Additional costs may include books, California Commission on Teacher Credentialing (CTC)​â¶Ä‹ ​fees, and other service charges.​

Candidates must have a preliminary credential in order to be eligible to apply for the Induction Program.

Applications are accepted​ and reviewed on a rolling basis.

​The ​â¶Ä‹Preliminary Education Specialist Teaching Credential - Extensive Support Needs (ESN)​ specialization​ prepares candidates to provide specially designed instruction that enable stude​nts ​(TK​â¶Ä‹-22) to access grade-level California Conten​t Standards in the Least Restrictive Environment.

This specialization is designed specifically for students with ​Extensive Support Needs ​related to one or more of the following disabilities​â¶Ä‹:

  • Autism
  • Deaf​â¶Ä‹blind disability
  • Emotional disturbance
  • I​â¶Ä‹ntellectual disability
  • Multiple disabilities
  • Orthopedic impairment
  • Other health impairment
  • Specific learning disability
  • Traumatic brain injury

Note: Educa​tion Specialists with the ESN specialization cannot serve students with only hearing or visual impairments​.​ ​

The education specialist provides intensive instruction and supports in two or more of the following domains: 

  • ​​A³¦²¹»å±ð³¾¾±³¦²õ
  • Communication
  • Gross/fine motor
  • Social-Emotional
  • Behavioral
  • Vocational
  • Adaptive/daily living skills.​
​â¶Ä‹The supports often include ​health, movement, and sensory support. ESN practices may include a lower student-to-educator ratio.​ ​

​Program Highlights​

  • This is a two-year internship-based program offering coursework 100% online. Eligible candidates work as paid interns​ in their second year.
  • Cohorts begin each semester in Spring, Summer or Fall.
  • First year focuses on coursework; second year, on coursework and internship.
  • Interns are assigned a program coach and a school district support provider.
  • Completion of the program results in a recommendation for a California Preliminary Teaching Credential​

*Note: As of June 29, 2024, Governor Newsom​ signed Senate Bill 153, which includes a provision that allows a candidate’s bachelor's degree to meet the Basic Skills Requirements (BSR) for most credentials. This means that the CBEST is no longer required for our program.​

Please review all mandatory requirements for acceptance into the credentialing program and follow the application instructions available on the Application Portal.​

Once you have the necessary documents ready, please create an online profile on the Application Portal, if you don't already have one, and complete the ​​online application.
