The abuse, neglect and/or maltreatment of children is a serious concern and the º¬Ðß²ÝÉçÇø Office of Education and its employees play an important role in protecting children and providing them with a safe, caring and nurturing environment. In order to complement the efforts of Human Resources around the issue of child abuse and neglect, we designed a Child Abuse and Neglect/Mandated Reporter awareness campaign with the intent of educating all SCCOE employees on the critical role that mandated reporters play in protecting the children in our care, while assisting employees who work directly with children and are designated as mandated reporters in understanding their moral and legal responsibilities.

Speech Recognition Workshop for SCCOE Teachers and Para-Educators
|
The initial purpose of the project was to develop a speech recognition (SR) workshop for º¬Ðß²ÝÉçÇø Office of Education and local school districts. The problem with SR is that it is not a plug-and-play device technology. Successful implementation of SR requires knowledge and training to effectively introduce the technology to teachers and students. The project has grown into the future vision of developing a Speech Recognition Institute that will offer a SR Certification (CEUs) for teachers and para-educators to include designing a SR curriculum for elementary students. The SR Institute will also serve/train SCCOE employees, local school districts (SPED and regular education), California State Department of Rehabilitation clients, and lastly be open to the public in supporting the use of this innovative technology.

E.L.L. O.N.E. - English Language Learner Online Network Engine
|
The purpose of this project is to develop an online lesson discovery, sharing and recommendation engine for teachers of English Language Learners and Common Core State Standards. Preparing lessons is time-consuming and mind-numbingly inefficient. Teachers are constantly seeking fresh ideas and materials to engage ELL students. Yet we know that it can be maddeningly time consuming to find just the right lesson, web tool, project or video to fit the need. We want to help educators develop these lessons for ELL students faster and provide a system so that they can find and share the best lesson plans, videos and other materials through any web enabled device.

Self –Determination and Student–Led IEPs
|
My primary goal for participation in the Champions of Leaders program was to obtain a different perspective of the organization from other departments. I have worked in Student Services for the Department of Special Education since 2008. My secondary goal was to use this focus to support the work on my dissertation for my Doctorate in Special Education. My study is exploring the relationship between self-determination and student-led individual educational plans. My work in this new position has enabled me to make the connections between the research and its application in the field. The opportunity to reflect and to learn other perspectives has supported me in the initial development of my dissertation. I am grateful for the opportunity to have been part of this program.

SCCOE School Nurse Website:
|
The SCCOE nurses are responsible for the health and welfare of all students in the County throughout the school year. The medical case management of each student requires many different health reports, immunization, specialized health care procedures and policies. The SCCOE nurses are scattered throughout the County; many are isolated from other nurses. This situation makes it difficult to disseminate information in a timely manner. After discussion with the Lead Nurse, we decided to research an online site that would focus on the needs and requirements of the SCCOE school nurse. The idea to develop a website for the SCCOE nurses was born. This website will provide access to the calendar year, a timeline of requirements, nursing forms, health data information and specialized health care procedures and protocols. This website can also be used to help with the orientation of new nurses that join SCCOE. This project is at its beginning stages and hopefully it will become a useful and effective tool for the nurses.

TEDxRidderParkDriveED

Our project is to host a TEDx conference at the SCCOE. TEDx allows independent organizations the opportunity to host conferences on a local level in an effort to share ideas that create conversation on themes that are important to the community. Our theme is Celebrating the Educator, and will be held in September 2015. As the new school year begins, our goal is to remind educators of their priceless value to the youth of our community, and in this role, the importance to take care of themselves physically, emotionally and spiritually.

Employee Attendance Procedure Screencast
|
The Payroll Services Department is responsible for updating and maintaining the attendance records for the 1600-plus regular employees working for the SCCOE. The goal of this project is to design and develop a screencast tutorial that will aid in the training of new payroll staff and act as a refresher for current Payroll Specialists.
The screencast will be created using a screen capturing program that produces a video of the work being processed on the computer. Once the recording is finished, it will be edited and narration will be added so that the final product clearly illustrates the necessary steps on how to review, verify, tabulate, update, and maintain employees’ leave balances. The finished video is expected to successfully provide the same level of instruction that would result from one-on-one training given while job shadowing another Payroll Specialist.

(MEP Without Barriers)
|
Within the five counties that our Region 1 Migrant Education program serves, we have several areas with a high concentration of indigenous speaking families. The top three languages spoken are: Mixteco, Triqui, and Zapoteco. Currently, we do not have anyone on our team that speaks these languages.
Our project addresses this need with a mobile application (MEP sin Barreras) that can be readily available via smart phone or tablet. This app will aid MEP recruiters during the screening and interview process as they work with families who only speak indigenous languages. Recruiters will be able to communicate the purpose of our program and obtain all the necessary information to complete a certificate of eligibility by means of oral translations available on the mobile app.

Employee Benefits Overview Handbook
|
The goal of this project is to improve efficiency and streamline employee benefits processing. This will be achieved by creating an Employee Benefits Overview Handbook which clearly outlines all of the benefits available to the employees of the SCCOE and creating a centralized location on-line where employees can access this information. This Handbook will help streamline the processing of new employees as we transition from one-on-one benefits orientations to group orientations.

Teacher Resource Guide
|
This project relates to improving the efficiency of teachers' daily work. I have created a resource binder for all new teachers to the COE or for veteran teachers. It is divided into important sections and has hard copies of all necessary forms and paperwork that a teacher might need to fill out during the course of the school year. There are some templates inside to show examples of how to fill out some of the forms. This binder is to ease the process of someone new to the COE that might not know all the answers, and although this is not the only resource to teachers, it is a start to having everything in one centralized place.

Accounting Procedure Manual
|
The purpose of my project was to develop a framework for formally documenting procedures for key accounting processes and making them available on the intranet for easy accessibility. The project seeks to streamline processes, ensure consistency while improving effectiveness and efficiency achieved through documented procedures.
To kick start the process, I have documented procedures for direct cost transfers and PO related Accounts Payable, utilizing an easy to follow template which includes high level process overviews, flowcharts and step by step directions.
